Heru (ornamental combs) were traditionally used by Māori men to fasten their long hair, which was braided, up into topknots. Heru indicated the rank of the wearer.
Today the Heru are a popular adornment for celebrations including Weddings, Graduations and other milestones.
Manaia considered a spiritual guardian protecting the wearer from evil. Traditionally with the head of a bird, body of a man and tail of a fish, creating a balance of sky earth and water
